Organic foods are foods raised or grown without the use of pesticides, chemicals, or hormones and antibiotics. In my opinion, organically raised foods are healthier foods. Remember the old saying, you are what you eat? That also applies to your food source. For instance let’s look at the cow. The cow is raised for food; the commercial farmer feeds the cow a mixture of grains, which contain hormones, steroids and antibiotics to help the animal grow to larger size, thus bringing a better price, since beef is sold by the pound. The steroids help the cow grow larger; since we-are-what-we-eat, the beef you consume contains a certain amount of steroids, which will also help you grow bigger. This also applies to all commercially farmed meats, beef, pork, chicken, fish, etc. Organically grown meats are fed naturally, no steroids, no hormones, and no antibiotics! Thus making the meat you consume more natural and healthier for your body. Let us look at vegetables and fruits. When growing vegetables and fruits, man-made pesticides are used. The pesticide kills the insects and keeps them from eating the crops before the farmer has a chance to harvest them. Anything you place on the plant absorbs into the plant (the same is true with your skin) and the pesticide is passed onto the fruit or vegetable, and to you when you consume it. Organically grown vegetables and fruits do not use such pesticides but natural means to prevent insects. The question one might ask is this: What is the point of working to stay healthy through exercise, rest and recreation if one’s body is continually being fed chemicals that many scientists and doctors believe cause diseases like cancer, psoriasis, nerve disorders, and many of the unexplained new illnesses of this millennium? Why and when did beef, chicken, pork, fish and other foods become a cause for deep concern? Surely there was a time in America when we ate these foods and did not become sick. Why do we buy produce and other foods that must be transported thousands of miles from some distant land instead of buying local, regional and national? The answer is simple, it comes down to money. Large commercial farmers control the market by being able to offer cheaper prices because they yield larger animals/crops by the means they raise them. Let’s look back at the cow we discussed earlier, the commercially grown cow will be much larger than the naturally grown cow and bring a better price at market, the larger cow will also contain more fat, and the unhealthy steroids, hormones, and antibiotics. It is believed by some that this is the cause of several illnesses we are seeing in today’s society. Let’s take a look at history. My great grandparents farmed. They raised all of their meats and vegetables; if they didn’t raise, it they didn’t eat it. They raised it naturally. At this time in history beef was consumed and didn’t have to be well done, chickens were consumed without salmonella poisoning being a concern. What caused the difference in the foods we consume?? Did you know that fruit, for example citrus, an orange or grapefruit is harvested, it is washed (with what) and put in a dye bath to make it pretty. It is harvested before it is time so the dye makes it look nice. Then it is injected with preservatives to keep it fresh longer. I compared a freshly harvested grapefruit just off the tree at season to one from the store. It was an amazing difference. The one that was fresh was sweeter and juicier! It didn’t even need sugar to make it sweet. The one from the store, as we all know, had a sour taste as we expect store bought/commercially raised grapefruit to taste. Also, the grapefruit that I tried was a white grapefruit and it was sweeter than a ruby red grapefruit that had been purchased at the local grocery store. This is my opinion, try it for yourself! You will be surprised, I am sure. OK, finally, where do I purchase organics? There are some chains that carry organically grown items. If your local grocery doesn’t, then request them. You will have better luck with the individually owned grocery stores accommodating your request than the larger stores. Publix carries some orgainics and also Kroger. Wal-Mart has a very small selection and also our Guntersville Southern Family Market now carries a few items. If in the Huntsville area you can check on Garden Cove at the corner of Pratt and Meridian St. They are an all organic store and carry about everything, except they do not carry meats. Recently in the Albertville area we have a New Organic Store called Cardinal Rose Organic Country Store. They have just about everything. What they don’t have, they can probably get for you if you request it. They even carry unusual items such as Ostrich. They also sell Amish Butter, Wright’s Dairy Milk and Ice Cream, a variety of homemade breads, homemade frozen dinners, and organic meats. They are located at 9255 Pleasant Grove Rd, Albertville, Alabama. 256-891-3869. Keep in mind they are cash and carry only. They also serve lunch Tuesday – Saturday. If you still are not convinced that organic is a healthier choice I would encourage you to search on your own. Don’t take my word for it, investigate. I have been eating organic for the past 2 ½, almost 3 years. (Will be 3 years in August 2006.) I began eating organic after being incredibly sick for several months and losing down to 85lbs. Read my story. Jordan Rubin has written The Maker’s Diet, and also Patient Heal Thyself, which I found very informative. Patient Heal Thyself was pulled from the shelves by the FDA so it may be hard to find a copy of it, The Maker’s Diet however, is a rewrite it contains pretty much the same information, but doesn’t include claims to his healing or product information claims to healing certain diseases. Dr. Rubin created the company and product line Garden of Life. At age 19 he was diagnosed with terminal Chrones Disease and told he would die. His story is quiet incredible. |
