I have received training from The Upledger Institute, Inc.
in Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (LDT). The following information will hopefully educate you on
LDT and why it is important and should be a part of everyone's wellness plan. If we keep our
bodies fine tuned through wellness therapies we will have a better quality of life. Our immune
systems will be stronger; therefore it will have greater ability to fight disease and infections.
The Importance of Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) for Good Health The proper functioning of the lymphatic system is critical to our body's ability to drain stagnant fluids, detoxify, regenerate tissues, filter out toxins and foreign substances, and maintain a healthy immune system. It is a complex system comprised primarily of lymph vessels and nodes working in cooperation to accomplish these tasks. Lymph vessels rely upon hundreds of tiny muscular units (lymphangions) contracting throughout the body to propel lymph flow. These contractions enable the lymph vessels to transport numerous substances to the lymph nodes. Surgeries, trauma, burns, infections, substantial swelling, fatigue, stress or age can hamper the movement of lymph. When lymph circulation stagnates, cellular function is significantly compromised. WHAT IS LDT LDT is an original hands-on method of lymphatic drainage developed by Bruno Chikly, MD, of France. Created out of his award-winning research on the lymphatic system, LDT takes traditional lymph drainage techniques and adds a level of precision consistent with recent scientific discoveries. Using exacting anatomical science and distinctive manual processes, LDT enables practitioners to detect the specific rhythm, direction, depth and quality of the lymph flow anywhere in the body. Lymph is fluid that circulates just beneath the surface of the skin. The main functions of the Lymphatic System are to absorb excess fluid to cleanse tissue on a regular basis and remove waste and cells in acute conditions such as an injury or necrosis. Through this process the lymphatic system maintains optimal functioning and retains the integrity of the connective tissue and regulates the fluid volume and pressure in a tissue. LDT is very gentle. It is not painful the touch is very light. Therapists work with flat hands, using all the fingers to simulate gentle, specific wave-like movements. These subtle manual maneuvers activate lymph and interstitial fluid circulation as well as stimulate the functioning of the immune and parasympathetic nervous systems. It is shown that when these actions are accomplished, the results can be: How the Lymph System Effects Immunity The immune system is the system that protects the body from substances that are recognized as foreign to the body. The lymphatic organs are those organs that are mainly responsible for the immune response. Increased Lymph flow carries more antigens to the lymph nodes, increasing the antibody/antigen contact. This can help the immune system. What Causes Lymph Node Enlargement Conditions that lead to lymph node enlargement are: 1. Infections: Bacterial, Viral, Fungus or Protozoa. (If your symptoms are Acute you cannot receive LDT during this time. The release of toxins may worsen your condition) 2. Inflammation: Autoimmune disease (Lupus, RA, Fibromyalgia, Chrones, etc) 3. Neoplasic disease (Cancer) Inflammatory, noncancerous nodes are often painful, presenting signs of inflammation, swollen, hot , tender. On the other hand, cancerous not\des may be firm and not tender, though cancer can rarely manifest in inflammatory forms. How is Lymph Therapy performed Lymph drainage is a hands on technique designed to attain and sustain proper functioning of the human fluid system. The process involves the use of gentle manual maneuvers to aid in the recirculation of body fluids. While the exact amount of pressure applied depends on the area and pathology involved, it averages an extremely light pressure. Using this technique, therapists are able to detect the specific rhythm, direction, depth and quality of the lymph flow. All sessions are performed by Debra Sewell, NCTMB, LMT, CFLMT/Owner. Debra is a Nationally Certified and State Licensed Massage Therapist #1378 |
