Things to Think About

Here are just a few questions for you to consider before buying a Toy or Mini Aussie. Many times people buy puppies without thinking of the long term commitment they are making. Aussies are very active dogs which need a good bit of attention. They are very active and need exercise. Just a few things you may not have thought about are listed below for your consideration.

You do not have to answer these questions to me, but you need to ask them to yourself and your family before making a commitment that should last for many years.

Have you ever owned a Miniature Australian Shepherd before? If not, are you familiar with this breed? If not brush up on the details of this breed.

Do you have children in your home? Aussies are normally great with kids.

Do you currently have any other dogs or other pets?

Miniature and Toy Australian Shepherds are devoted companions which need a lot of attention and their desire is to be with you. How much time could you spend with your pup? Do you like going to the bathroom by yourself, Aussies love to follow you everywhere!

Will your dog be primarily housed inside, outside or both? Will your dog have room to exercise, run and play?

As with most breeds, when left alone for excessive intervals, a Mini or Toy Aussie may act out its frustration by barking, digging, or other undesirable behavior. Will you have a safe place to keep your dog while you are gone?

Do you have any concerns about getting a new puppy? Puppies are a lot of work and commitment. Just like having a new baby in the house!

Mini and Toy Aussies are fairly “easy” to care for, but are you aware that they are a “double coated” breed that sheds its undercoat heavily in the spring and again in the fall? Proper grooming requires an occasional bath and weekly brushing - especially while they are shedding. Are you prepared to groom your animal regularly?

Describe your “PERFECT” Mini Aussie! For instance, would you prefer a male/female? Do you have a particular color/eye color in mind? What temperament are you looking for; please include activity level. Also, Mini Aussies may vary in size from 14" - 18" tall, depending upon the individual registry standards, Toys range from 10” to 14”. Do you have a particular size in mind? How important are each of these points?

Are you aware that puppies need to be properly socialized with people and animals?
